Business Meeting

Business meeting and elections will be held at noon on Saturday, October 1, 2022 at the CE site. Lunch is included for those registered for the course. Please RSVP if you are not registered (you may register online for this without paying). Please send agenda items to the office or President Christian Appel by Sept. 10, 2022. Final agenda will be posted in the members only section at www.aptamt.com by Sept. 21, 2022.

Cancellation Policy

APTA MT reserves the right to refuse/cancel an event registration. If ATPA MT refuses a registration, registrants will be offered a full refund.

Registration Cancellation by Participant:

Cancellations will be accepted in writing via email or mail. A $25.00 administration fee will be withheld when cancellation occurs up to ten days prior to the start of the event; 50% refund if cancelled 2-10 days prior; 25% refund if cancelled 0-1 day prior.

Group Discounts:

10% Discount for 3 or more APTA Member PTs/PTAs from one clinic. Fees for all persons must be made with one payment. No exceptions. Credit will not be provided at a later date. Combining discounts (ie Lifetime AND Group) is not applicable. If you need to take advantage of this, call us for a group code to pay online, or mail in your check with participant names.

Student Discounts:

Students may take this course at a rate discounted by 50% of the member and non-member rate, if there is space available prior to the start of the course. This course is a laboratory class with limited space, and therefore we must limit the spaces available at the student rate. If you are a student and would like to attend if we do have extra room for this course, please register for the student waitlist. APTA MT will notify you one week prior to start of the course to offer you a space in the course, if available.

Lifetime Member:

Course Description:

Return to Work- It Won’t Happen by Accident

Presenters: Lorena P Payne and invited speaker (TBD)

Course objectives:

  • Understand the role of provider under workers compensation
  • Develop a prevention program
  • Choose useful components to evaluate the worker with activity limiting injury
  • Estimate risk for delayed return to work
  • Develop a plan of care and recommendations for return to work
  • Assess risk factors for delayed recovery
  • Construct a meaningful functional assessment
  • Compare the demonstrated functional ability with work requirements

Course Summary:

If you have been contemplating taking that next step to expand or improve services to workers and employers, attend this session. Information necessary to build an occupational health program from the ground up or to improve the existing services will be presented. Topics will include evaluation, psychosocial measures and interventions, functional testing, return to work recommendations, job site prevention and consulting. This is your chance to connect with peers and gain information regarding occupational health resources available across the country.

A Scenario:

It appears that I am in for a long evening. I am preparing to complete a functional capacity evaluation that is on my schedule for tomorrow. Along with this referral came the medical records to review, two reams of paper that were received by our clinic earlier today. I am exhausted already! This case involves a 42-year-old worker that sustained an ankle sprain 2 years ago. To make this long story short, the worker remains off work and is applying for disability. They continue to participate in physical therapy involving soft tissue mobilization and dry needling.

The above scenario begs the question, “What is guiding clinical decision making from initial injury to return to work?” After reading numerous histories like the one described above, a group of physical therapists decided to look at the research to figure out how to best guide practice. Sure enough, we wrote a 102-page novel of our own, known as a clinical practice guideline! Now before I lose you, we have come up with some bite size pointers that you can implement today, with your next patient that presents with a work restricting injury. You can end this kind of story before it begins.

About the Speaker
Lorena Pettet Payne
Physical Therapist, Masters of Public Health Administration, Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist

Lorena Pettet Payne, a practicing physical therapist since 1983, assists companies in minimizing risk and promoting healthy work habits in diverse settings including auto manufacturing, steel production, food processing, light manufacturing, ranching, construction, the service industry and office environments.   

As adjunct faculty, Lorena teaches occupational safety and health at the University of Montana for the doctoral program in Physical Therapy.

She has served in the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) in various elected positions including two terms as president of the Occupational Health special interest group and two terms as president of the APTA Montana.

Through volunteer work in under-resourced areas of Ecuador, Lorena assists individuals with physical limitations gain access to and involvement in gainful employment.  Carroll College students traveling with Lorena from Carroll College are mentored in global health initiatives and the physical therapy profession.
